Chiswick Man Jailed For Sexually Assaulting 18 Year Old Girl

A 30-year-old resident of Chiswick, Andrii Melnyk, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for two counts of sexual assault.

The sentencing took place at Reading Crown Court on January 17th, following Melnyk's conviction for an attack that occurred on April 2nd of the previous year.

The incident involved Melnyk following his 18-year-old victim after she disembarked from a bus in Staines at approximately 6 am.

He proceeded to grab her arm and attempted to pull down her trousers. During the struggle, when she fell, Melnyk held her down and subjected her to sexual assault.

The courageous victim resisted, fought him off, and called for help. A nearby taxi driver provided assistance and contacted the police, prompting Melnyk to flee the scene.

Surrey Police meticulously examined CCTV footage from the bus and successfully identified Melnyk based on the provided description. Cross-referencing Oyster card data further confirmed his identity.

A search warrant was executed at Melnyk's residence, leading to the discovery of clothing matching his attire on the CCTV footage, including distinctive jeans with mud stains on the knees.

The victim positively identified Melnyk as the perpetrator in an identity parade. Subsequently, he was charged with the offenses and remanded in custody.

Detective Constable Katherine Peters, the investigating officer, emphasized the complexity of the investigation involving forensics, intelligence, witness testimonies, and CCTV analysis.

She praised the survivor's bravery and resilience, highlighting that Melnyk's imprisonment ensures the removal of a dangerous individual from the streets.

DC Peters urged victims of sexual assault to come forward, assuring them that the police would listen and diligently work towards bringing perpetrators to justice.

Melnyk has also been placed on the sexual offenders register for life.
